My story
So you might find it odd, yet awesome, that I do indeed live in the Dominican Republic. I like to call myself the, “Caribbean Chica”, but most people would call me, “Gringa”. I’m from Long Island, New York and I can tell you that I certainly never imagined myself living in paradise at 25, and I truly couldn’t be happier. I mentioned that you might find it odd that I live here because most people are sort of going the opposite direction…they grow up in DR and then work to one day move to America. That’s certainly not everyone, but I’ve found only a handful of people with a story similar to mine. (More to come in a future blog post on my observation of cultural differences).
I’ve noticed that most of the time people move to where opportunity lies. That could mean many things depending on what’s important to you; but maybe it’s the social life, business world, or environment/culture. For myself, I always knew I didn’t want to be tied down to one place. Whether that meant through a job or different responsibilities, I wasn’t sure. What I was sure of, was that I didn’t want to live a life of Ordinary. I wanted to give back, never settle, make an impact, and seek out all that life could offer.
In the years to come, at 19, with eyes wide open for opportunity and a believing heart, my path was guided towards ways I could create this life. Not always easy, but I met people who helped me connect the dots. I met people who could stretch me. I was able to grow in my ambition, spirituality, confidence and self worth, education, relationships, creativity, and imagination ect. Isn’t that important? All too often I find the sad reality that many people never reach their true potential because of a lack of mentorship and positive association they never sought to have. I sure am thankful for all the people I have in my life today, including my future husband I met along the way 🙂
So in seeking to break the mold, within the last few years Luis and I learned how to develop companies and different assets. We learned to utilize the knowledge of the people in our lives to detach the hold that, in reality, money had over us. We learned that wealth isn’t a zero sum game, and although money isn’t everything, life can be tough with a lack of it. (We’ve all been there)
Today we enjoy spending each day together and growing a never ending bucket list of places to travel. Our goal and vision grows through our contribution of helping a select group of people each year to create the same types of results in their own lives. Sounds fancy, but I promise you we’re just average people with an above average desire to make a difference.
What decisions are you making today to break the mold?
I hope you are making the BIG moves that you are capable of. #makeyourselfproud
